FLORENCE, S.C. -- The opening reception for the 2017 Pee Dee Regional Art Competition brought artists and aesthetes alike to the longest-running art competition in South Carolina.
The show, which "highlights the best contemporary art in the Pee Dee," will be up through March 24 at the Florence County Museum Waters Gallery, 135 S. Dargan St., in downtown Florence. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Visitors can cast their vote for the Jo Ann Fender Scarborough People's Choice Award through Friday, March 10. The people's choice award winner will be announced March 20.
During the opening receptions, a first-place $1,000 cash prize was awarded to Yvette Cummings of Horry County for her acrylic work "When the Magpie Came" by sponsor Chick-fil-A at the reception. Second place went to Debbie Broadway of Darlington County for her "And So it Was"; third-place winner was Ashley Arakas of Horry County for her "Apprehensive Love"; and Lynda English of Florence County won honorable mention for "Through the Eyes of a Child." The competition juror this year was Marvel and DC Comics illustrator Sanford Greene.
