Ranked by US News & World Reports as one of the best of the South, Francis Marion University is one of South Carolina’s 13 four-year, state-assisted universities. Classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a master’s level university, FMU takes pride in providing a strong comprehensive education in a broad range of undergraduate majors. The university also offers professional schools in education and business, as well as graduate programs in business, education, psychology, and nursing.

The university is located six miles east of Florence, on 468-wooded acres dotted with beautiful foliage and mature landscaping. Campus facilities include modern classroom buildings, laboratories, and residence halls — all in a safe, comfortable learning environment.

More than 96 percent of FMU students come from South Carolina, and the majority of the students hail from the Pee Dee region.

The university has a number of recreational facilities that are available for use that include the new, state-of-the-art Griffin Athletic Complex. The university intercollegiate athletics program sponsors 14 sports, seven each for men and women.

The Performing Arts Center, completed in 2011, is located in downtown Florence. It provides unparalleled performance venues for the region featuring national, regional, and local performing artists.

FMU’s Health Science Complex at the intersection of West Evans and Irby streets features 52,000 square feet of classrooms and office space. The building serves as the home base for FMU’s nurse practitioner graduate students, for the third- and fourth-year University of South Carolina medical students, and for FMU’s physician’s assistant program, which began in 2016. The Hugh and Jean Leatherman Medical Education Complex is under construction in the downtown, across the street from the Health Science Complex.
