Virginia Derryberry is an accomplished painter and educator whose work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States. Her Private Domain series features large-scale figure-based narrative paintings that blend elements of mythology and alchemy to explore duality, transformation and the complexities of human nature.

Derryberry places mythological and alchemical themes within contemporary settings, inviting viewers to consider multiple interpretations rather than a single narrative. Her paintings combine realistic volumetric rendering with abstract and painterly passages, creating shifting spaces where fact and illusion intersect. Increasingly incorporating multiple canvases, the works expand traditional narrative structures and suggest connections to Renaissance altarpieces and graphic novels.

In addition to exhibiting her work, Derryberry will serve as juror for the 2026 FMU Student Juried Art Show, an annual exhibition showcasing selected artwork by Francis Marion University students. Her role as juror provides students with the opportunity to have their work evaluated by an accomplished professional artist and educator.

Derryberry’s work is represented in numerous public and private collections, including the Carnegie Museum in Philadelphia, PA, Asheville Art Museum, Tennessee State Museum and Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, GA. Her honors include the College Art Association’s Distinguished Teaching of Art Award, the Southeastern College Art Association’s Outstanding Artistic Achievement Award, and multiple artist fellowships. Her public art installations include works at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and the Knoxville Convention Center.
