Artist Reception and FMU Student Juried Awards

Private Domain features large-scale narrative paintings by artist and educator Virginia Derryberry. Drawing from mythology and alchemy, the series explores duality, transformation and the complexities of human nature.

Inspired by the alchemical concept of rebis, Derryberry’s contemporary “re-enactments” place mythological themes within modern settings. Rather than illustrating specific stories, her paintings invite multiple interpretations. Combining multiple viewpoints, lighting systems, detailed rendering and abstract passages, the works create shifting spaces where reality and illusion intersect.

Increasingly incorporating multiple canvases, Derryberry expands traditional narrative structures. Suggesting Renaissance altarpieces and graphic novels, these works create visual conversations about what is revealed, what is concealed and how meaning changes with perspective.

Alongside Private Domain, the gallery presents The 2026 FMU Juried Student Art Show, showcasing selected works by Francis Marion University students and celebrating the creativity and diverse perspectives of emerging artists.

Derryberry will serve as juror for the student exhibition, giving FMU students the opportunity to have their work evaluated by an accomplished artist and educator. Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and is represented in public and private collections, including the Carnegie Museum, Asheville Art Museum, Tennessee State Museum and Morris Museum of Art.
