Pat PattenThe downtown area, also referred to as the Historic Overlay District in Florence, South Carolina is being redeveloped by the Florence Downtown Development Department located in City Hall, tasked with attracting people and new businesses to the area. They offer incentives to preserve the historic buildings, such as a wide variety of grants for signage, improvements to exterior facades. Also available are low interest loans to qualified businesses. It is obvious their efforts are paying off and injecting new life into this historic town. Situated at the junction of two major roads, I-95 and I-20, there are lots of new and interesting restaurants, hotels, and a wide variety of shops. Some places of particular note are the Florence Hotel, Ella's Boutique Etc., and James Allen Plaza. While walking around the town, I met a lovely police officer, Liz Volten. She was great to talk to and shared her opinion as to why so many people are now moving to Florence. There is a great old town atmosphere combined with a new vibe, as evidenced by the After Dark Jazz Cafe, an awesome place to hear some great local musicians. On Wednesday is open mic night where musicians, artists, poets and writers perform in a welcoming environment. Overall, my visit to Florence was so very interesting! This is a little town with big dreams and well worth a visit.
